Ah... You noticed I was gone? [ Not that she was particularly trying to hide it, but she's surprised to hear that. Happy as well, and it shows, as a fuzzy warmth seeps through the connection. ] I'm...very sorry for worrying you.
I'm happy to hear that, though! Now that I'm back, I'll be sure to attend the other rituals as well. I want to do all that I can for her.
My brother was involved in another mutual killing game. Togami-san thought that Monaka was the mastermind, so he sent me and Touko-chan to go and investigate. She wasn't the mastermind, though... [ Should she tell him that she decided to go to space because of his hope and despair teachings as Servant? ...Nah. ] Anyway, he survived the mutual killing game, decided to rebuild Hope's Peak Academy, and became its headmaster.
[There's a pause. He wants to ask about Monaka but at the same time...] We're from the same frame of time then. We took the blame for the killing game to help the Future Foundation save face.
[Komaeda listens with rapt attention and ducks his head slightly to hide his flushed face. Hearing talk like that stirs his hopes that are never far these days. When he raises it his smile is a little more relaxed. Faint threads of green littered with glimmering dragon scales flow through the wind Red called up.]
A boat it is then. I don't know much about them! But I remember they need a wind and sails to navigate without any sort of engine. It's fitting isn't it? Holding steadfast against the elements with just our wits and luck to carry us on.
I used to just let luck decide things. ...it's still strange to think how powerful bonds can be. But, [His smile grows, finally reaching his eyes. A warmth in the grey as he says softly.]
But I've seen the evidence for myself. I'll never doubt the strength of friendship or the courage it brings when you know you're not alone. No matter where we are this tie will always be here.
The land was blanketed with snow and ice. There was a storm that raged through and up into the sky. It was only with the help of Thras and Peromei alongside Red's icy bird that it was kept at bay. The way up the mountain was treacherous even on vehicle.
[She can't handle telepathy. Or dislikes it. He doesn't know why but he won't press. Komaeda picks up his spoon and touches it very lightly to the surface of his soup.] All the while this insidious feeling of love and comfort tried to slip past whatever hate we had. It was like a low grade hunger of the very soul.
When we reached the top of the trail. Everything was covered in thick black ice. It was thickest around the door. ...and all the while birds flew near us. Two perched on either side of where we knew the door was.
[ She quickly writes this down without a single moment of hesitation, nodding each part of the way to show him that she's still listening even if she isn't looking at him directly, still a little bit in thought. ]
I have a few follow up questions, then. They might sound trivial, but it's best to know all the facts and not misinterpret things. Or make any assumptions, either. [ Inaba laughs a little, halfheartedly. ] By storm, are we talking about a snowstorm? Or some other kind of storm?
And the second one would be... did the feelings come like, suddenly? Or was it like rising? You say it's hunger, but I want to know just how deep the effects are rooted and how it all works. [ Inaba seems to talk from experience and it shows in the interest in her eyes. ] And besides, in terms of love, there's different kinds of love, you know? That's why I'm asking it like this.
[ That explains it, then - why her brother was able to fulfill his promise in coming back for her. She remembers the message she left for him when she made the decision to stay in Towa City. She would wait for him until the day he stopped the Remnants of Despair and returned home. Of course, getting to know the former Remnants here in Verens heavily changed her opinion of them, but... ]
And you guys are okay with that? ...Taking the blame, I mean. It wasn't any of your faults, after all.
No. You must understand, the land we stepped onto. That is Elios. His land and the place he rises from. Essentially it's like walking on him.
[He sets his spoon down and holds his hand palm up. A cold storm of wind, ice, and snow whirls at the heart of his hand.] Anyway I'm talking about a snow storm.
[He doesn't answer the second question. His eyes look faintly haunted as he returns to eating. He picks at the soup taking it slowly.]
The birds are part of him as blood belongs to us. They appeared before according to other sources when he was corrupted with hate. He came thirsting for love and to fill the emptiness with it.
I[He doesn't respond for a moment as he thinks of how to word it.] It isn't an ideal solution for anyone. We were thralls and no one will care what we say about that. The only way to keep the world from falling further was to accept our role as was dictated! It is atonement in a way.
[ She hiccups into a slight sob. She doesn't think that it's fair they have to accept the blame for something that wasn't their doing. She doesn't think that it's fair that they're still so heavily stigmatized as the Remnants of Despair. Sure, they had been that way once, but that was the past; sure, they still needed to atone for the despair they caused, but...she doesn't think that this is the way to do it.
They would only continue to be hated and feared for "forcing" the Future Foundation into a killing game. Now that she's gotten to know everyone better, now that she considers them as her friends--no, family...she doesn't think that it's fair that they continue to be hated by the public, even if they can live happily among themselves on Jabberwock Island. That sort of result might as well be considered isolation, in her opinion. ]
I-It's not fair...that Komaeda-san and the others have to carry this by themselves... The only reason you all became the Remnants of Despair was because of Enoshima-san, right...? So...it's not fair.
[ She doesn't finish her sentence, but it's clear that there's a bit of annoyance in the way she says it before she finds herself sighing. ]
I see. [ Inaba seems to say that almost half-heartedly, but it isn't as if she isn't taking the situation seriously. ] So all of that is a part of him.
So basically they showed up whenever Elios was unbalanced... but you didn't answer my second question, you know. [ She wonders if he's avoiding it on purpose or just waiting. ]
[He sits in silence, eyes wide though she can't see them. He'd made her cry. Icy shock spreads through the link like a layer of frost. What can he do to help her? Komaeda stares at the wall and switches it to image. He holds up his left hand.]
[He sets the spoon down. There's no getting around it. Komaeda stares out the window, watching the people walking by. It's easier than meeting her eyes.]
The effects are deeply rooted. If you aren't prepared in any way, you'll have a problem. If you have a lack of love or a need for it, you'll have a struggle. It feels like slipping beneath the ocean waves.
As much as you dislike the idea...I found my saving grace was someone else tied to my mind. We watched out for changes in each other. But I imagine, just being united together could help.
[ Ah. Maybe it was a mistake, asking. But at the same time, this information is vital; in fact, it's rather important, considering her background. How she's yearned for the feeling because she didn't want to be alone anymore. Friends. Family.
Then there's--
She shakes her head at the thought as she tugs at an arm, fingers digging into the fabric of her sleeve. ]
I can't have someone tied to my mind like that.
[ There's disgust in her voice, but there's also something underlying in it that shows up as frost under the chair she's sitting. Fear, rejection.
The near quiet sounds of a soft, cold wind blowing. ]
... Sorry. [ She apologizes, but only because of the harshness that sat in her tone. ] I just don't like people in my head. I don't like to admit it, but it scares me.
[He will be the last to arrive to the meeting spot. Komaeda walks out of the shadows, grey coat slapping against the back of his thighs. He carries a brown paper bag and a cup from steambucks. He holds out the cup to her and the bag.
The scent of hot chocolate wafts up and warm cinnamon scone lies in the bag.] I thought you'd need this.
[He says nothing at first. When he looks back at her his face is unreadable. Not even the air gives away what he's feeling. It takes a moment to unclench his jaw.]
You might have to. If you want to stay free.
Whether that has to be or not is yet to be determined. But I would consider the possibility. He will be far worse than he was when we saw him. Likely his attempts to sway us will be stronger.
[He picks up his spoon, flipping it between his fingers in a careless manner.] Plans are being made. I can't discuss them right now. But we will have help against him. If you think you can't face a corrupted Elios. Stay at the safe haven when it is announced.
[ "You didn't have to," is what she doesn't say, but it's definitely how she feels. She takes the bag and sets it beside her, then takes the cup to hold within both hands. The aroma from the hot chocolate is certainly enticing, but she feels that there's something more important she should say before she starts to partake in the treats he gave her. ]
[ Quiet at first, Inaba finds herself trying to conceal her emotions, sucking a breath as she manages to shake herself out of it. Nevertheless she interlaces her fingers together, squeezing on them tightly. ]
I won't allow it to happen to me. [ She doesn't even dare to hide the frustration that's slowly boiling in her voice. It's clear by now that she has problems here, even if they're ones she isn't voicing. ] It's fine if you can't talk about it right now, but it's definitely a good thing that plans are being made to stop them. I don't know if I'd be able to face him, but... I can at least assist those who can't.
Who doesn't get upset when friends are hurt or in trouble? [It seems reasonable to him. They can't do anything to change their world save the ways they have. He sees his fate as atonement but, not everyone does.]
Being upset is the only thing that can really be done about this one. I'm sorry I have no gentle way to say it.
No... No! That's not fair! There has to be another way...!
[ She understands the situation, of course, and why he feels that way. The Future Foundation was an esteemed organization, revered by many who opposed the Remnants of Despair and lauded their efforts to eradicate them. If they found out the truth behind the killing game, that it had been started by a member of the organization all along, then what would happen...? No one would want to risk it, and that was why they had to take the fall for it. But it still wasn't fair. ]
Maybe the only reason I feel this way is because I've had the chance to know you guys now... Maybe in our world, I wouldn't feel this way and would have still been scared of you guys. But I'm glad that I got to meet you all! Here in Verens, you all are my precious friends, and I love every one of you! And it's not fair that you all have to hide away... If onii-chan was ridiculed for wanting to save you all, then...I'm sure he would gladly bear that shame again to clear your names!
But the world needs to move on. [He gently touches her hand with his human one. He covers it and bows his head. This is not what he expected at all. Komaru had thrown him off guard. He drops his gaze to their hands as he continues, his voice soft and as gentle as he can manage.]
It needs to continue to recover. And we...we would rather be like this and have some peace. Fighting the world isn't something any of us want. None of us really had a place in it before. We'd have less of a place if the world were to go over our lives and to try to find any reason to disbelieve us. We are criminals that killed millions. They need someone to blame. That we even have our lives is something.
The fact your brother can revive the fallen Hope's Peak means the world is moving on. I have misgivings about it but, he can achieve its true purpose. I have boundless faith in his capacity for hope and ability to bond with others. With all of you by his side you can prevent future misuse.
I know it hurts. It isn't fair. But, [Komaeda looks up at her face with a gentle smile that lights up his whole face.] We have each other. We love you too. Nothing will change that. If we need us we'll be there.
[She was on a mission, and that mission stopped the moment she found Komaeda. It hadn't really taken too much time, she had come to know generally where he should be during the different times of the day and days of the week. But still, that first leg of the journey was now complete.]
Komaeda kun.
[She said his name with the utmost importance.]
I need a party member for a grinding quest.
[Her hands were balled up in front of her and she had a look of determination in her eyes.]
[Komaeda blinks and sets down his mug of tea. Tea had become a habit once the doctors and healers of the hospital had recommended a blend for his symptoms. It became such a natural part of the day that once he got better health he just switched to different blends. He turns to face her with the work desk between them. She had come across him while he was dabbling in Dunami. Up the hall and down at the side of the house, heavily warded is his research lab. It was on the side in case anything goes wrong and everyone needs to sprint for the horizon.]
Ah, I assume you need good healer. I'm not doing anything too important right now. But I won't do it for free. Are you up for a deal?
[He circles around the table and snatches up the pot of tea and a mug.] Can i get you some tea for this discussion?
